SFMTA substitutes 40-foot buses on five routes due to maintenance | The Locally Times

Preventative maintenance on 30-foot buses forces route modifications and potential delays on five Muni lines effective June 18, 2026.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) began using 40-foot buses on five routes starting June 18, 2026, to accommodate preventative maintenance on its 30-foot fleet. The affected lines include the 35 Eureka, 36 Teresita, 37 Corbett, 39 Coit, and 56 Rutland routes. ## Service Impacts Because the 40-foot vehicles are longer than the standard fleet, they cannot safely handle certain narrow streets or tight turns on these routes. The SFMTA warns riders to expect longer wait times and inconsistent service across these lines. Additionally, real-time arrival predictions for stops near impacted areas may be inaccurate or unavailable. To assist passengers, the agency has assigned personnel to impacted segments during morning and evening peak periods. The SFMTA advises riders to sign up for email or text alerts through the agency's subscription page for real-time updates. ## Essential Trip Card For seniors and people with disabilities who may struggle to walk to alternate stops, the SFMTA show the availability of the Essential Trip Card. This program provides two to three round trips by taxi at 20% of the cost of a regular cab fare. The card is accepted by all taxis operating within San Francisco. ## What to Watch While the agency has not specified an end date for the maintenance-related substitutions, riders should monitor the SFMTA website for updates regarding the 35, 36, 37, 39, and 56 routes. The 39 Coit route is also subject to separate reroutes on June 20 and 21 due to the North Beach Festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
