Caltrans closes State Route 20 for bridge demolition June 1-3 | The Locally Times
Crews will demolish a bridge pier for the $112 million Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project, forcing a three-day highway closure.
Caltrans District 3 will close eastbound State Route 20 at the Interstate 80 junction from 6 a.m. Monday, June 1, to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 3. The closure allows crews to demolish the bridge pier and footing for the $112 million Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project, a rebuild of the I-80 freeway overpass at SR 20. ## Traffic and Detours Drivers traveling eastbound on SR 20 toward I-80 must use State Route 49 to reach I-80 in Auburn or State Route 174 to reach I-80 in Colfax. Caltrans requires all large trucks to use SR 49 for the duration of the closure. The eastbound I-80 off-ramp to westbound SR 20 will also close; motorists must continue to Eagle Lakes Road, reverse direction, and use the westbound I-80 off-ramp to reach westbound SR 20. The California Highway Patrol will enforce the closure, which permits access for emergency vehicles only. ## Project Scope Flatiron Construction of Concord manages the project, which replaces the existing bridge to increase load-carrying capacity for extra-legal load trucks. The project includes installing median barriers, upgrading drainage, and deploying roadway weather information systems. The work is scheduled for completion by winter 2027. Caltrans notes the June 1-3 closure schedule remains subject to change based on weather conditions or material availability. ## Regional Infrastructure This closure follows a 28-hour shutdown of the northbound Capital City Freeway, or State Route 51, which began at 11 p.m. May 29 and is set to end at 3 a.m. May 31. That project involves a $239.5 million bridge rehabilitation at the American River Bridge, requiring a polyester concrete overlay. Caltrans reduced speed limits to 55 mph in both construction zones. ## Key Questions **How long will the State Route 20 closure last?** The closure is scheduled for three days, from 6 a.m. on Monday, June 1, to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3. **What is the recommended detour for large trucks?** Caltrans requires all large trucks to use State Route 49 to connect with Interstate 80 during the closure period.
