St. Johns River District Declares April Water Conservation, Springs Protection Month | The Locally Times
The district is highlighting responsible water use and the importance of protecting Florida's springs and groundwater systems.
## April Designated for Water Conservation and Springs Protection The St. Johns River Water Management District has proclaimed April 2026 as both Water Conservation Month and Springs Protection Awareness Month. This designation, made in partnership with organizations like the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association, aims to underscore the critical need for responsible water usage and the safeguarding of Florida's key water resources, including its springs and the groundwater that sustains them. ## Addressing Dry Conditions The district's efforts come as the region faces continued dry conditions. A March 11 hydrologic conditions report indicated four consecutive months of below-average rainfall. This has led the district to declare a Modified Phase II Severe Water Shortage for portions of northeast and central Florida due to declining water levels. The district also extended a Phase I Moderate Water Shortage to additional North Florida counties in late February. ## What to Watch The district's newsroom highlights ongoing initiatives, including its WATERSPOUT podcast and a YouTube channel featuring videos on water-related topics. Residents are encouraged to visit the district's website for water-saving tips and information on reclaimed water use. The district's Governing Board is scheduled to meet, with agendas and livestream links available on their website. A Southern Recreation Public Meeting is also scheduled for April 21 in Palm Bay to gather public input on recreational use of district conservation land.
