Urban League of Greater Madison Expands Homeownership Initiatives at The Hub | The Locally Times
The Urban League of Greater Madison has launched a series of educational programs at The Hub, aiming to assist 100 local families in securing their first homes by December 31, 2025.
The Urban League of Greater Madison has officially commenced a comprehensive homebuyer education curriculum located at The Hub, a facility that represents a $28 million investment in the South Madison community. This initiative is designed to address the 15% gap in homeownership rates between minority populations and the broader demographic in the region. During the sessions held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month, participants receive instruction on navigating the $10,000 down payment assistance programs currently available through local lenders. The curriculum covers 8 core modules, including credit repair, mortgage underwriting, and long-term property maintenance. Since the opening of The Hub on November 16, 2023, the Urban League has seen a 22% increase in enrollment for financial literacy workshops. Each participant is required to complete 12 hours of classroom training to qualify for specific closing cost grants that can reach $5,000 per household. The Dane County Board has allocated $500,000 in support of these housing stability efforts to ensure that residents can remain in the area despite rising property values. The facility, which spans 45,000 square feet, provides dedicated space for these financial counseling services to operate 5 days a week. Financial advisors working with the program monitor the progress of 30 active participants who are currently improving their credit scores by an average of 45 points. The program also partners with 10 local banking institutions to provide low-interest loan products that require as little as 3% down. As of January 1, 2025, the Urban League has successfully graduated 40 individuals from the intensive homebuyer certification course. The total budget for the 2025 housing outreach program is set at $750,000, which includes funding for 2 full-time housing counselors. These professionals assist families in managing debt-to-income ratios that must remain below 43% to qualify for conventional financing. Through these structured educational pathways, the Urban League of Greater Madison continues to use the resources at The Hub to support economic growth for 100% of the families enrolled in the program.
