The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will limit participation in the 2027 Upriver Lakes sturgeon spearing season to 500 license holders. Spearers interested in the season, which covers lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts, must submit applications by August 1, 2026. ## Application Process The DNR issues these 500 tags through a drawing process. Applicants with the highest number of preference points receive priority in the selection. For those applying as a group, the DNR calculates point values based on the individual member with the lowest number of points. Applicants can apply for the tag or purchase a preference point through the Go Wild system or at authorized license sales locations. The agency will notify selected applicants by October 1, 2026. Individuals not selected in the drawing will receive a preference point for future years and remain eligible to purchase a Lake Winnebago spearing license until October 31, 2026. ## Season Details The 2027 Winnebago System sturgeon spearing season is scheduled to begin on February 13, 2027. The season is authorized for a maximum of 16 days, though the DNR may close the fishery earlier if harvest caps are reached. The agency maintains separate, biologically based harvest caps for the Lake Winnebago and Upriver Lakes systems. The 500-license limit is intended to prevent overharvesting in these specific waters.
