DC Water suspends service disconnections during extreme regional heat wave | The Locally Times

Mayor Muriel Bowser activated an Extreme Heat Alert through July 5, halting service disconnections as temperatures approach 109 degrees.

Mayor Muriel Bowser activated an Extreme Heat Alert for the District effective Wednesday, July 1, through Sunday, July 5. The order mandates the suspension of water service disconnections for non-payment while the heat index remains at dangerous levels. ## Heat Index Forecast The National Weather Service projects daily high temperatures exceeding 100 degrees through the holiday weekend. When accounting for humidity, the heat index is expected to reach 105 degrees, with peak levels hitting 109 degrees. Overnight temperatures are forecast to remain above 75 degrees, exceeding historical averages for early July. ## Public Health Resources The District maintains free cooling centers at community centers and other public facilities to assist residents during the alert. The administration advises residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and to monitor vulnerable neighbors, including older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions. ## Emergency Assistance Residents concerned about individuals experiencing homelessness can request free, accessible transportation to low-barrier shelters or day centers. The District operates a 24-hour Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093. Alternatively, residents may dial 311 to request assistance or report heat-related concerns. The administration may extend the alert period depending on updated weather forecasts following the July 5 expiration date.
