Alexandria Initiates Fiber Optic Installation on North Fairfax Street | The Locally Times
The City of Alexandria has initiated a project requiring the closure of 1 lane on North Fairfax Street to facilitate the expansion of municipal fiber infrastructure.
On October 21, 2024, the City of Alexandria announced a temporary traffic modification affecting North Fairfax Street to accommodate the installation of city-owned fiber optic cables. This infrastructure project involves the closure of 1 northbound lane to ensure the safety of construction crews working near the 200 block. The city expects the work to continue for 14 consecutive days, weather permitting. According to the municipal budget, the city has allocated $450,000 for the current phase of the digital connectivity expansion program. Officials confirmed that 100% of the project costs are covered by the 2024 capital improvement fund. Residents are advised that traffic delays may increase by 15% during peak commuting hours between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. The City of Alexandria Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is overseeing the project, which aims to improve network speeds for 3 municipal buildings in the immediate vicinity. Motorists are encouraged to utilize 2 alternative routes while the lane remains restricted. All construction activities are scheduled to conclude by November 4, 2024, at which point the lane will reopen to 100% of normal traffic capacity. The city maintains a 24-hour hotline for residents to report any issues related to the 5 active work zones currently managed by the municipal engineering team.
